Submission Guidelines

Writers

Please submit one story, or essay, at a time. Poetry submissions can include up to 5 poems. Submit clearly typed manuscripts, double-spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 inch white paper, one side only, to:

H.O.W. Journal
12 Desbrosses St
New York, NY 10013.

The submission must contain your name, address, e-mail address, and a telephone number where you can be reached. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope or we cannot guarantee your work will be responded to or returned. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but please let us know immediately, if your submission is accepted elsewhere. It takes up to 4 months to respond to submissions. We do not accept submissions via fax or email. The word-length limit is roughly 8,000 words.

After edits are done to our satisfaction, writers will receive a payment. Payment varies according to the length and genre of the submission, but we pay $100.00 minimum for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

We buy First Serial Rights; nonexclusive, and one-time anthology rights. Authors proof their galleys and receive 2 copies of the issue in which their work appears.

All manuscripts are carefully considered. Due to the large number of submissions, we regret that we cannot comment on every manuscript.

We request a donation by check or online at our donations page of $5.00 payable to Helping Orphans Worldwide. All proceeds received from submissions go directly to the orphanage we are working with at the time.

Artists

Please mail us color copies or digital files of your original art, or you may email us your digital files or your website link. Please do not send original art or slides. Payment varies for accepted submissions.

We recommend that you include a cover letter, along with some biographical information when you submit your artwork.

If you are mailing your submission, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope in the appropriate size for the safe return of your artwork submission. If you are emailing your submission, please send email to: art (at) HOWjournal.com

Please be patient with us as we try to review artist submissions. We will try to respond to your submission as soon as possible but may take up to 4 months.

Music Program for Safe Space
Currently we are raising funds to start an art, music and film-making program for young adults at Safe Space. This program gives them the opportunity to work creatively and express themselves in new mediums. The program will help develop the self-confidence and self-esteem necessary to lead positive and productive lives.

Safe Space works with the city's most at-risk youth and families to build strong families and promote self-sufficiency. Their unique and holistic services are progressive and meet the ever-changing needs of the people they work with each day. Their mission remains urgent: to protect kids, keep them safe and help them grow.
